Job Overview

The Plumber position at Wake Island involves installing, maintaining, and repairing plumbing systems, including water supply and drainage systems, in support of U.S. Air Force operations. This is a rotational role with a schedule of 3 months on-site followed by 1 month off. While on-site, housing is provided in dormitory-style accommodations, and all meals are furnished through the cafeteria. Transportation to and from Honolulu, Hawaii, is provided via government-sponsored aircraft. Candidates are responsible for their flight from their home base to Honolulu.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing codes.
  • Operate water treatment equipment to filter and disinfect water for human consumption and industrial use.
  • Operate and maintain reverse osmosis filters.
  • Operate and control electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate the flow of raw water into treating plants.
  • Inject specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine and potassium permanganate, into water or adjust automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect and clarify water.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of plumbing experience.
  • Plumbing Journeyman License or higher required, with work in Civil Engineering or equivalent military experience.
  • Master’s Plumbing License is preferred.
  • Must possess excellent oral, written, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to execute on multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have the ability to deal with the customer and company employees in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.
  • Must have the ability to work extended periods of time, shift work, and on-call.
  • Valid State Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain government clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to pass a background check and drug screen.

Physical Demands

  • Work involves making repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where parts of systems worked on may be in hard-to-reach places.
  • This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • May be required to lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Work Environment

  • The diversity of work conditions may range from an office environment where there is little or no physical discomfort to a field environment where inclement weather may subject the individual to severe changes in temperature, wind, rain, etc.
  • May be required to work in areas where high noise hazards prevail.
  • May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and electrical shock hazards.
  • May be required to work a flexible work schedule and alternating workdays to meet mission and customer requirements.
